DAVID W. CUMMINGS AND BEATRICE M. MADY: The Work of David W. Cummings and Beatrice M. Mady
DAVID W. CUMMINGS AND BEATRICE M. MADY:
The Work of David W. Cummings and Beatrice M. Mady

Beatrice M. Mady will be talking about the work of David W. Cummings and her own work on a JCAST live tour of the exhibit: Sun, Oct 4 2020, 1:10pm

The exhibit celebrates the life and work of David W. Cummings, a life lived together with Beatrice M. Mady; the couple's work is full of shapes and symbols, and their message is in living color.

David passed from us suddenly last year, but he left the brilliance of his work for us to keep. We are excited to exhibit his and Beatrice's works together highlighting the exciting ways these two artists' works developed and interacted with each other.
David came of age as a painter in the mid to late 1960s. He immersed himself in the Bay Area Figurative Painting scene in San Francisco and soaked in the California light. Then he moved to New York and spent  the 70s painting and exhibiting in Soho and beyond, and was featured in a survey of abstract painting that traveled to museums across the country before finally arriving at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In 1977 he met Beatrice when he was  giving a lecture at Pratt where she was studying for her MFA. The two started a relationship as artists and a romance that would span four decades.

By the early 1980’s, David and Beatrice had married and left their Soho loft behind, finding a factory building in the Jersey City Heights neighborhood of JC, and converting it into living/studio spaces. Pioneers in the Jersey City art scene, they were among the early artists who came to Jersey City and formed relationships with many of the artists in the building fondly referred to as “The 111”. Beatrice helped build the arts community through her active participation, support and encouragement in Pro Arts, as a Professor and Gallery Director at St. Peter’s University, and, of course, her artwork.

ABOUT DVORA POP-UP GALLERY
Picture
Dvora Pop-Up Gallery at the base of the Oakman residential building is a beautiful, glass-front, street level exhibit space that can be viewed by passers-by day or night. The gallery, which opened 2020, is an extension of building owners Eyal and Tal Shuster’s commitment to area artists. The Art Project, the program they launched with Victory Hall/Drawing Rooms Director, James Pustorino in 2014, now features over 60 solo-artist lobby exhibits in five Jersey City buildings and promotes their works. The gallery can be visited during open hours or by appointment.

Dvora Pop-Up Gallery will be presenting continual solo exhibitions of Jersey City area artists for 2021. The space is located on the ground floor of the Oakman building and is fully wheelchair accessible. Parking is available directly in front of the entrance. Victory Hall Inc./Drawing Rooms' directors are working in collaboration with Shuster Management as part of The Art Project to create exhibit opportunities for artists in the Jersey City area.
