Sandra DeSando's Boundaries is a combination of work on paper and her most recent panel board paintings. The earlier drawings with their delicate, realistically rendered trees marked over with strong gestural inks and brush strokes paved the way for the free calligraphic beauty of the panel paintings as the artist moves more and more into the essence of nature.
"I feel I have what is now being call ecological grief. With the loss of so much of our environment. I was seeking answers to why I felt so connected and how I could undo the damage. I thought of going beyond our physical boundaries to become more connected to the essence of our world. I settled on the tree as my totem to help me reach this goal, or rather the trees chose me." - Sandra DeSando
David French's Numerator series features large, glowing areas of color with mists of white moving across the deep field suggesting a illumined cosmos.
I use oil paint because of its fluid, fleshy quality not unlike the body. The painting surface is a skin its illusory depth a body and space. I use metallic paints in my 2003 Numerator series where I consider chemotherapy, and the platinum based drug I received for treatment. In this group a notion of metallic poison as life saver, or remedy, location for healing and meditation all interest me. - David French
