Drawing Rooms 2019 JCAST show features a group of JC artists whose works deal with imagery of the cosmos, atmosphere or space, and/or the love of someone or something. In developing this show, the term "cosmic love" is an overarching theme used as a metaphor for the bonds within our artist community. Artists include Anne Trauben, Bill Stamos, James Pustorino, Jill Scipione, Maggie Ens, Mollie Thonneson and Sky Kim. Curated by Anne Trauben.
Bill Stamos' works seek to "create a 'transcendental alchemy', moving viewers towards a heightened awareness of the universe, and our place in it - a 'cosmic connection' which gives our lives added depth and meaning."
Mollie Thonneson's "Poseidon's Adventure" is a series of work that marries recycled lingerie and off the bolt fabrics to create an imaginary world made up of individual pieces that, paired with their titles, encourage the viewer to consider the multifaceted feminine sexual experience.
Jill Scipione's crocheted garlands previously spent weeks wrapped around at-risk city trees and she hopes they "will extend the presence and life of the trees, celebrating the beauty and shade they provide and the emotional and visual relief from an environment increasingly dominated by cement."
Sky Kim says her meticulous, labor-intensive watercolor paintings record "my personal time, space and raw emotions in each moment of creation. The idea of energy constantly flowing without a beginning or an end has become the focus of my work, coming to life through various motifs that recall what I describe as the spinning wheel of life."
Maggie Ens' built GYPSY KOOMBYEYAH in our gallery, fashioning a dynamic spiraling web of hula hoops, toys, fibers, wire, and other natural and man-made items, to fulfill her vision of Cosmic Love; "to tap powerful, hopeful, creative forces, strengthening and developing one’s sense of wonder".
