 Alan Walker  Bio & Statement
I paint because I love color, materials, and the process.
For most of my life I’ve created interpretations of photographs, as a scene and portrait painter.
Recently, I’ve been working abstractly. I enjoy the improvisational aspect and freedom from having something too specific in mind when I start. I especially like being surprised by the result.

I was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 20, 1957, but raised in Southern California.                                    I come from a family full of talented, creative people, and have always identified as an artist.        I was fortunate to have a fantastic high school teacher, Mr. Jerry Nicholson, a fine painter, whose uncanny ability for pulling the best out of his students, helped get to another level.
Somewhat disappointed by three years of State Universities, I decided to go to a real art school. I applied to and was accepted by Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena.  I began classes in the fall of 1979, as an Illustration major. After that I found work at an Ad agency on Wilshire Blvd and moved to West LA.  During the summer of 1981, I made my first trip to New York City. I became obsessed with moving there.
I moved to New York during the summer of '88. I luckily found a job at The American Museum of Natural History, and representation at Gallery Revel, on the corner of Spring and Mercer. Although we enjoyed a good relationship, I was a landscape painter stuck in the city. I had difficulty finding subject matter.  I lost my way for a while. I took a break. I played music. I succumbed to a cycle of wage slavery and acquisition. I moved to Jersey City in 1994.
In March, 2009, picking up a brush for the first time since 1995, I found my true self.                                         Again.  I’ve been painting full-time ever since.
