Beatrice M Mady Artist Bio & Statement
The idea of dualities has always been a part of my work. From my early stain paintings to the canvas I’m working on in the studio today, I have been intrigued with the ideas of opposites both spiritually and conceptually in the way the shapes and forms play out compositionally. Nature is the inspiration for the forms I use. Nature, however, is not merely imitated in the work, but acts as a departure point for a metaphysical experience.
My work is organic in the sense that there is an internal energy or life force that allows the piece to evolve within it as well the ability to grow into the continuum that is the body of my work.
Beatrice M. Mady is a digital artist and painter currently living and working in Jersey City, New Jersey. She received a M.F.A. in painting from Pratt Institute and a B.F.A. from the University of Dayton.
Her works are on view in museums such as the Dayton Art Institute, Museum of Friends and Drew University Museum, and in corporate collections; Pfizer, Ortho Dermatological, Janssen Pharmaceutica, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Johnson and Johnson, Sydney and Francis Lewis Foundation, Arenol Chemical Corporation, Capital Health Medical Center, The Provident Bank of NJ, PNC Bank and in private collections. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. She was a recipient of a Ford Foundation Grant, a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant and several Kenny Grants.
Ms. Mady is a Professor, the Graphic Arts Coordinator and Gallery Director of the Fine Arts Gallery at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Mady’s paintings have always been about texture and pattern, a task she accomplishes by using gestural brushstrokes and impastos. Her digital work created in the vector based program Illustrator is inherently flat. She incorporates her photographs from her travels and creates patterns from various sources such as native fabric design or pottery. Color in both her paintings and digital work is the core around which her dialog begins.
