JC Prayer Flags Library Project
Drawing Rooms invites you to be part of a Jersey City Art and Studio Tour celebration called JC Prayer Flags Library Project!
This project is a city-wide display of flags/banners placed at many libraries throughout Jersey City inspired by Tibetan prayer flags used to bless the surrounding area. While we are all living through the coronavirus pandemic and the fight to create racial justice and equality, we feel we could all use blessings. The flags placed at neighborhood libraries’ fencing will send out good karma to nearby neighborhoods and create a sense of community among participants, as well as viewers. What We Need You To Do: Take inspiring photos of persons, places and things in your neighborhood and send the pictures to us! We will choose among your pictures to create an inspiring banner which will hang outside the libraries. You can also email a meaningful quote to us which can be included in a banner. When: Deadline for photo and quote submissions is Thursday, 9/10/20. Drawing Rooms is a nonprofit art gallery in Journal Square. This project is funded by Drawing Rooms’ project grant from the Jersey City Mayor’s COVID-19 Relief Distribution Fund. |

Drawing Rooms' 2020 14C exhibition focuses on drawings on paper and constructions that explore systems, repetition, mark-making and natural form.
Like all of the artworks in the exhibit: Helen Kwah's Fingerprint drawings, Jill Scipione's Census Series of box-like shapes, Bayard's gathered and layered multi-colored fabric works, Sandra DeSando's books that unfold tree-forms and light and shadow, Kate Dodd's explorations of Islamic patterns and Anne Trauben's multiplicities of circle-shapes, all build vibrant growing structures that are balances of the work of the hand and the workings of the mind. |

FINAL WEEKEND 11/7/19-11/10/19
Artist Talks SUNDAY 11/10/19, 3-5pm
Anne Trauben
Mollie Thonneson
Maggie Ens
James Pustorino
Come over to see the exhibit, meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.
Anne Trauben creates a constellation of glowing ceramic and paper forms that spread across the gallery walls and ceiling, to make a system in which "any of the elements can be removed and exist on their own, or remain as a part of the poetry of their placement together”.
Mollie Thonneson's " Poseidon's Adventure" is a series of work that marries recycled lingerie and off the bolt fabrics to create an imaginary world made up of individual pieces that, paired with their titles, encourage the viewer to consider the multifaceted feminine sexual experience.
Maggie Ens built GYPSY KOOMBYEYAH in our gallery, fashioning a dynamic spiraling web of hula hoops, toys, fibers, wire, and other natural and man-made items, to fulfill her vision of Cosmic Love; "to tap powerful, hopeful, creative forces, strengthening and developing one’s sense of wonder".
James Pustorino’s work employs elements of drawing and painting, mark-making and schematic systems to consider how to describe the space around and above the earth and the forces that affect and shape our physical reality, as well as how this connects to our inner reality.

Artist Talks SATURDAY 11/2/19, 3-5pm
Bill Stamos
Sky Kim
Jill Scipione
Come over to see the exhibit, meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.
Bill Stamos' works seek to "create a 'transcendental alchemy', moving viewers towards a heightened awareness of the universe, and our place in it - a 'cosmic connection' which gives our lives added depth and meaning."
Sky Kim says her meticulous, labor-intensive watercolor paintings record "my personal time, space and raw emotions in each moment of creation. The idea of energy constantly flowing without a beginning or an end has become the focus of my work, coming to life through various motifs that recall what I describe as the spinning wheel of life."
Jill Scipione's crocheted garlands previously spent weeks wrapped around at-risk city trees and she hopes they "will extend the presence and life of the trees, celebrating the beauty and shade they provide and the emotional and visual relief from an environment increasingly dominated by cement."

This ‘N That! SATURDAY 10/26/19!
Please join us this Saturday, 10/26/19, from 3-5p for our second This ‘N That! event at which time Curator Anne Trauben will be in conversation with the two writers, Bruce Halpin and Tris McCall, who reviewed Cosmic Love. Bruce Halpin’s piece was published in Nieuw Art Blog, and Tris McCall’s in Jersey City Times.
We will also be screening select relevant videos. Refreshments will be served.
The event begins with short videos that celebrate the theme of the show, **Cosmic Love** and all its associations: the cosmos, the culture, the community. Starting with music from the 111 Jam Band! Remembering where our community started._
Drawing Rooms' Comic Love, features drawing, painting, sculpture and installation by a group of JC artists whose works deal with imagery of the cosmos, atmosphere or space, and/or the love of someone or something. In developing this show, the term “cosmic love” is an overarching theme used as a metaphor for the bonds within our artist community.

Kevin Darmanie, under his persona Kevin Dot Galaxy, will be deejaying the Opening Reception on Saturday, 10/5/19, 6-9p. Kevin’s music will take the event to another level! He will be launching Cosmic Love into the upper stratospheres (and Stamosphere too :) ! Kevin describes himself as a deejay and music selector hailing from Newark NJ. His term with avid record collector and deejay partner Peter Reyes exposed him to the depths of rare funk and disco as half of duo Sleaze and Dot. An insistent vinyl only spinner, his sets flow through funk and disco into house and techno with melodramatic flair. All this flavored with rhythms that nod to his Trinidadian roots. |
