Harriet Fink Bio & Statement
Born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, a second generation American. Drawing and reading are my twin poles. Reading during meals, drawing while watching TV.
Years of Jewish private school. Art history major in college. City planning, then architecture in grad school: an M.Arch degree. Study with a brilliant painter; my true mentor.
Work as an architect for many years.
Move to the country from the city to live in a house of my own design. Husband, children. Independent practice. Economy tanks, work dries up. An opportunity to make art: take a year, cutting up and reconfiguring my own etchings.
A gallery in Connecticut takes two pieces. I change careers, show work in various places. My work now consists of painted on paper collage, with various themes: nature, quilts, geometric relationships.
Move to a New Jersey suburb.Teaching art at William Paterson and the Old Church Art Center.
Move to a studio outside the house. Painting and drawing on paper, large pieces. The themes are repetitive natural patterns. I begin to explore my relationship to various Hebrew texts, with an interest in writing as drawing.
