Josef Zutelgte Artist Bio & Statement
When I work, different mindsets or strategies come into play. Sometimes I like to stroll around aimlessly, with no set purpose or direction. These are the moments when I discover unexpected things and moments were I surprise myself. The action can be a walk in the city or a stroll around my drawing paper, both are liberating. The “Meandering Drawings” are a result of this kind of action.
When the pencil hits the paper, the meandering can start to take form, and sometimes magic happens. My mind is free, and through observation and interpretation, through the exacting line or unexpected stroke, the drawing comes to life.
For me, the process is focused but also fun and filled with anticipation. I enjoy finding out what will happen—and what changes I will make. Change is critical to the process—and to my goal. If there is one quality I want my work to possess, it is the ability to create some sort of change in the viewer. Of course, the thought of producing something that touches or changes others in some way is daunting. Achieving it means working and reworking and re-thinking—and the potential for failure always hangs in the balance. Ironically, it is often at that point, when I think I might have to reconsider my idea altogether, that magical things happen.
