Pauline Galina Artist Bio & Statement
In the Venus USA works, cutouts from fashion catalogs, defy the curtain-like ground I make by stroking the page with dry pastels. The unexpected appearance of a disembodied bikini or suspended text bubble is an act of deliberate sabotage, contaminating the exquisiteness painterly texture of the abstract backgrounds. At the same time, floating above these grounds, the cutouts gain a formal beauty they did not have in their original context, as if magically absorbed from the rich, velvety pigments.
Born French in North Africa, raised first in Switzerland and then in France, Master in Fine Arts Paris France 1984. Moved permanently to New York City in 1994. Art Business Certificate from Christie’s Education NY.
"Talkative" are a decade-long stream of consciousness series of drawings, gouache on paper, in sets of 2 to 32 drawing per series. While individual drawings range from pure abstract shapes and colors to representational objects, symbols and structures, the Talkative series is a visual conversation between me and my surroundings where each image drives a metamorphosis that creates another, like the division of cells. In this way, work in a series is a compulsive creative process, which is both analogous to and a commentary on the means by which our visual sense is solicited in everyday by the visual zapping and profusion of images. The compulsive search the eye makes– moving between many possible relationships or narratives– replicates my creative process. It revives the playful pleasure of looking; pleasure anchored in the ability to take the time to look and to interact in a conversation with the art piece.
