“The flower paintings are based on photographs I took over the course of several summers. I took the photographs strictly for to use as subjects for paintings. I was looking for dramatic images that would express a physical aspect of nature. I remember going to an exhibition at Mana Contemporary that featured sexually explicit images. I found these works rather repellent but also on display were a few bold black and white paintings of flowers. These works spoke to me, and had what I thought of as “flower power.” My aim was to make paintings that had a commanding presence in which the viewer would see the subject of flowers in a new way.”
