Susan Cornick
Susan Cornick Artist Bio & Statement
Susan Cornick describes her creative process as intuitive and spontaneous. Preferring “on-the-spot responsiveness” from the media and materials she works with, rather than preconception, and improvisational expression over planned composition, she is guided by “whatever feels necessary at the moment”; varyingly, inspiration finding her before she begins working on a piece, other times, the work proclaiming itself after the piece is finished.
Inspired by simple and complex combinations of color, texture, movement, and the relationship of shapes, edges, vertical-horizontal lines, and the interplay between pattern, scale, and the freedom of experimenting with different materials and spatial relationships between various compositional parts, she moves paint around and heaps colors and texture on top of each other so they collide, and then, instinctively creates order and pulls out form. She describes this action in painting as, at its core, “the spirit of abstract expressionism”. Believing that abstraction is invariably subject to interpretation, she seeks to convey her own reality through her work and to engage the viewer to see theirs. Her ultimate goal: that she has created something beautiful and the viewer finds a connection.
Susan was born in Chicago, Illinois; has exhibited in numerous group shows in New Jersey and New York, showcased her work at art festivals in Jersey City, sold work in various Jersey City retail boutiques, and is represented in private collections in Canada, New York and New Jersey. She received a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a BA from Rutgers University; and has completed courses in metalworking at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and ceramics at various studios in New York City. She maintains a studio in Hamilton Park, Jersey City.
